How a Small Family Operation Became an Oil Producer

Gulf Coast Western traces its roots back to 1970, when Matthew Fleeger’s father started the company as a modest operation focused on developing oil and gas reserves in Louisiana and Texas. What began as a small business built on domestic reserves has since grown into a firm with production activity spread across six states.

Early Growth Through Partnerships

The company expanded largely through relationships forged with investors willing to back its early efforts. Those partnerships allowed Gulf Coast Western to acquire acreage and reserves well beyond its original footprint in Louisiana. As the years passed, joint ventures became a bigger part of how the firm operated, giving it access to properties and expertise it could not have developed alone.

Acquiring thousands of acres of productive land over time, the company applied selection criteria aimed at finding properties with strong upside rather than simply expanding for its own sake. That discipline shaped how Gulf Coast Western grew during decades when many smaller operators either sold out or shut down entirely.

Matthew Fleeger eventually took the reins as president and chief executive after building and selling his own company, MedSolutions Inc., to Stericycle in 2007. His return brought a different set of skills to a business built by his father, including experience in acquisitions and corporate structuring gained largely outside the oil industry.

Six States, One Family Legacy

Under his leadership, the joint ventures and property acquisitions that once defined the company’s early decades have continued, with Gulf Coast Western still targeting reserves in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. The firm’s partnerships with entities such as Orbit Energy Inc. and Orbit Gulf Coast Exploration LLC have played a role in extending its operations into new territory.

Five decades after its founding, the company still operates with the same emphasis on partnerships and careful property selection that carried it through its earliest years, a pattern that has helped it outlast plenty of competitors that entered the business with far more capital behind them.
