Westport Advisor Michael Gold On Judgment Over Automation

Three converging trends are reshaping the wealth management industry heading into 2026, and Michael Gold Westport believes none of them can be solved with better software alone.

Close to three-quarters of privately held business owners expect to transition or exit their companies within the next decade, a wave of activity tied to an estimated $10 to $14 trillion in potential exit-related wealth. At the same time, the so-called Great Wealth Transfer is expected to peak this year, with $84 to $120 trillion projected to move between generations over the next two decades. Layer on top of that a wave of retirements, with nearly half of all financial advisors expected to leave the profession by 2035, and Gold sees what he calls a structural gap opening at precisely the moment ultra-high-net-worth families need the highest level of judgment, coordination and leadership.

A Doctor’s Approach

Gold, founder and CEO of Westport-based Gold Family Wealth, often compares his method to how surgeons handle high-stakes decisions. During his own three spine surgeries, he recalled, no doctor ever asked what he thought should happen next. Instead they ran a full battery of tests and presented every option, from conservative to aggressive, before any decision was made.

Coordination, Not Products

That same discipline, Gold argues, is missing from much of wealth management today. “Wealth managers want to appease the clients,” he said, describing a business model too often driven by product sales rather than sound process. His Westport firm instead positions itself as the coordinator of a family’s full financial life, pulling specialists together rather than adding another disconnected voice.

The stakes of getting this wrong are rising. With trillions of dollars set to change hands amid business transitions and generational succession, families are increasingly searching for advisors who can manage complexity rather than simply manage a portfolio. Gold contends that the firms prepared to fill that gap, combining deep experience with genuine coordination, will define the next chapter of advisory work for the wealthiest American families.
