Shelton Haynes

Shelton Haynes serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). The Rockaway Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), founded in 1984, oversees all island-wide public spaces and infrastructure. To better the lives of Roosevelt Island’s residents and visitors, he has led RIOC in some directions.

The Riverwalk Neighborhood Development Project, led by Haynes, was completed in 2021. It included the creation of a new waterfront park in addition to new residential and commercial structures. The completion of this project marked a significant achievement for RIOC, as it contributed to the island of Roosevelt becoming a popular place to live and visit.

Haynes has also been doing his part to make the island more welcoming to visitors. Among these are the expansion of existing public transit alternatives and the introduction of novel modes of transportation, such as shared bicycles and motorized scooters. He has also helped establish a public safety department and implement other measures to increase security, such as adding surveillance cameras.

Additionally, he has worked hard to protect the island’s historical landmarks. Along with Haynes’ advocacy for restoring the island’s ancient lighthouse, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation revealed a memorial to the island’s pioneers in 2021.

Shelton Haynes supports the growth of pickleball through his work with Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. They collaborated in 2021 to introduce pickleball to Roosevelt Island. The two are now constructing a world-class pickleball facility with several courts to ensure that all interested parties have an equal opportunity to enjoy the sport.

It’s evident that Shelton Haynes cares deeply about improving conditions for Roosevelt Island residents, and the results of his efforts are observable. His efforts to enhance island access, preserve its heritage, and introduce new recreational options are admirable and will be recognized for years to come.
