Consequently, he uses these lessons to help others learn more about themselves as well. Gearing up for his next event, Olugbenga Agboola will be discussing “The Nigerian Civil War: The Impact on Me” with other speakers of similar backgrounds. The event will take place on March 24, 2010, at the House of Blues in New Orleans. The events will start at 2:00 p.m.
The Nigerian Civil War had a significant impact on Olugbenga and the lives of countless people in Nigeria during the late 60’s to early 70’s. During this period over 3 million Nigerians lost their lives and 13 million people were displaced from their homes as they fled from soldiers. The war was between the newly independent country of Biafra and Nigeria itself, which was ruled by a military regime led by General Yakubu “Jack” Abacha. Military forces were sent to Biafra, which was an independent state created by Eastern Nigeria’s Eastern Region people.
Olugbenga Agboola’s first kid wasn’t born until the war was over. He spent the time with his family, away from the war. He still remembers that period of time as a very difficult one. His whole life was overshadowed by this war and he still talks about it today with much emotion and dedication.
“When I fought for secession [from Nigeria], I carried something in my heart that was very strong, deep and strong, but I also realized that what we did had consequences,” Agboola says.
