John Hailer Testifies before Joint Committee on Emerging Technologies in Massachusetts

Hailing from the modern-day days of the Internet, social media, and mobile apps, new technologies now have the potential to impact the quality of life of Massachusetts residents significantly. As the new economy and digital transformation continue to grow, so does the demand for technology professionals with data analytics and management skills.

To become a data engineer or data scientist, one must have a working knowledge of computer science (written and computer algorithms) and data analysis skills. Additionally, an emphasis must be placed on data integrity and data safety. “Our global network links businesses to the world,” John Hailer said. “It also links the state to global markets and economic growth.”

Hailer, appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick to the Massachusetts International Advisory Council (MIAC), testified at a hearing on new international flights from Massachusetts airports.

“Connecting business with opportunity is our mission,” John Hailer said. “We can do this because we have access to a network of global partners that spans every major region of the world, including Asia and Europe, where business investment opportunities are snowballing. In fact, according to Ernst & Young data from earlier this year, Boston is one of only three North American cities where foreign direct investment flows are increasing over time.”

Hailer noted that several other states aggressively pursue international routes to create jobs and attract investment. “We need to ensure that Massachusetts can compete for those flights,” Hailer said. “Our economic future depends on it.”

The former Natixis CEO also testified at a Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) hearing. He said the MLSC is helping create jobs and grow the economy. He said: We want to make Massachusetts more attractive for business, tourism, and trade.

The state’s airports, John Hailer said, are important economic generators. They are vital hubs for the state’s economy and serve as gateways to the world. And with an increase in both trade and tourism comes an increase in jobs, particularly high-paying jobs. Hailer said that a recent study on the economic impact of Logan International Airport found that it generates $1 billion annually in gross domestic product and supports nearly 45,000 full-time jobs with an average salary of $76,000 per year.

With experience at Natixis, Hailer also said he is pleased that Massachusetts has committed to moving ahead with plans to improve Logan Airport by adding new gates. He’s expanding terminal capacity and enhancing security systems – critical areas identified in a study submitted by Massport earlier this year.

Hailer said the flight also helps attract and retain talent in Massachusetts. He said nonstop service from Boston to Tokyo would make it easier for companies to bring in and keep top-notch employees, especially workers needed for new business opportunities and expanding existing businesses.
